Following national search, the DeKalb Community Unit School District 428 Board of Education announces that Billy Hueramo has been selected as the finalist candidate for the position of Superintendent. While the Board has reached a consensus on the selection, the appointment is contingent upon the successful negotiation of an employment contract and official approval during an upcoming public Board of Education meeting. The Board of Education anticipates finalizing the contract and holding a formal vote of approval on Monday, January 5, 2026, at a special meeting.

"After evaluating a diverse pool of exceptional candidates that included educators from across the country, it became clear that Billy Hueramo possesses the unique combination of institutional knowledge, visionary leadership, and a deep-seated commitment to our students," said Christopher Boyes, President of the Board of Education. "His proven track record within our own hallways and his clear plan for the district’s future stood out during the final interview process."

Hueramo, who currently serves as DeKalb CUSD 428’s Director of Teaching and Learning, PreK–5, emerged as the top choice from a highly competitive field of more than 25 applicants. He began his career with the District in 2007 as a student teacher and was subsequently hired as an English as a Second Language teacher at Clinton Rosette Middle School. Hueramo went on to become an Assistant Principal at Huntley Middle School and Principal at Littlejohn Elementary School before transitioning to the Elementary Curriculum Coordinator in 2020. He has been in his current role since 2022. Hueramo is also a United States Marine Corps veteran serving from 2000 to 2008.

The search for a new leader began in November, attracting 25 internal and external applicants from various educational backgrounds. The Board put forth seven candidates for the first round of interviews, which were then narrowed down to four finalists who underwent comprehensive interviews with more than 40 members of interview teams comprised of department directors, union leadership, employees, and community members. Three of the four finalists were external candidates.

Throughout his tenure with DeKalb CUSD 428, Hueramo has established himself as a trusted, intentional leader whose student-centered approach has fostered strong relationships with teachers, parents, and community stakeholders alike.

"I am incredibly honored to be named as the finalist for the superintendency of the district I call home," said Hueramo. "I’m excited for the opportunity to continue serving in this new capacity and lead efforts with our students, families, and staff that build upon a culture of collaboration, belonging, and rigor that supports the academic and social success of every student.”

Once formally approved by the Board of Education, Hueramo will assume the role of Superintendent on July 1, 2026. Current Superintendent Minerva Garcia-Sanchez, Ed.D., will continue in her role until the end of her contract June 30, 2026.
