On August 1, 2026, the Board of Education and Superintendent Hueramo engaged in a collaborative governance workshop to reaffirm their shared purpose of strengthening the partnership between the Board and the administration in service of the DeKalb CUSD 428 community.

Superintendent Billy Hueramo said, "One of my first priorities in this new role is to ensure that we, as a team of eight, continue to build a strong governance team that, while we have different roles and responsibilities, remain focused on doing what is best for our students, staff, families, and community."

The workshop included discussions about their shared purpose and clarified governance expectations, strengthened communication commitments, and established a framework for how collectively they will approach decision making.

Mr. Hueramo expressed his gratitude for the time the time and commitment the Board is dedicating to this effort and shares this is not meant to be a one-time event. Another Board-Superintendent workshop is planned for sometime in December or January to reflect on progress made, celebrate successes, and identify areas of improvement. The mid-year session will also accommodate time to assess work against the superintendent's goals, the district's core values, and the strategic plan.
