
Anthony Jones, Ph.D., has been selected to fill the Director of Teaching and Learning, PreK-5 position, currently held by Billy Hueramo, who will take over as superintendent for the DeKalb Community Unit School District on July 1, 2026. The Board of Education approved Jones’ appointment at its March 3, 2026, meeting. Jones will also begin his role with the District on July 1, 2026.
With more than 15 years of experience in building and district leadership, Jones has served as a director, interim principal, assistant principal, and equity leader, supporting administrators and teachers in strengthening curriculum and building systems that help all students succeed. “Dr. Jones is an experienced educator and instructional leader committed to academic excellence,” said Billy Hueramo, current director of teaching and learning pre-K to 5, and incoming superintendent. “We’re excited to welcome Dr. Jones and continue our commitment to ensure every student has access to high-quality learning opportunities.”
In his role with DeKalb CUSD 428, Dr. Jones will provide leadership, coordination, and facilitation in the development and implementation of teaching and learning programs. “It’s clear that the district is committed to providing and supporting a rigorous and meaningful curriculum that meets the diverse needs of its students,” said Jones. “I’m excited to use my experiences to continue advancing academic excellence, equity, and strong community partnerships to advance the mission of this dynamic district.”
Jones currently serves as the Director of the Laboratory School (PK-12) at Illinois State University. Dr. Jones has led strategic planning efforts, supported improvements in teacher compensation, and overseen major facility upgrades while maintaining a strong focus on student learning and community partnership. Throughout his career, he has prioritized equity by examining how policies and practices affect student outcomes and by working to remove barriers, so that every learner feels supported and challenged.
Dr. Jones holds a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Iowa State University, along with a master’s in education from Milligan College in Tennessee, and a bachelor's in exercise and sports science from Iowa State University. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and becoming actively involved in the community he serves.
